Start a Team
The best way to be successful at fundraising is to have the support of others, starting a team is the best way. Get a group of co-workers, classmates, friends, or even your entire fraternity or sorority together. Set a goal as a team and get started today.
Those who start early usually raise the most money and reach their personal goal with ease.
Pick a team leader, somebody who knows how to keep everyone motivated and keep everything organized.
Call, visit, e-mail, instant message, text message and write everyone you know and ask them to be a sponsor. You may convince somebody to join you for the Inspiration Walk. Click to download and use the Inspiration Walk Business Cards (.PDF) to help spread the word.
Everybody likes to win. If you are walking with a team make fundraising a competition. See who can contact the most people, who can get the most people to give a donation or who can raise the most money. If you are walking with co-workers make an office trophy to compete for, or let the winner pick a gift certificate to the place they like to eat lunch. You could even challenge another department or even another company. If you are walking with friends the winner could receive their car cleaned, their lawn mowed, or their house cleaned. Be creative and have FUN!

Remind people that Special Olympics MD, Inc. is a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations to which are deductible to the fullest extent by law.
The Inspiration Walk is a 3-mile walk that takes place on an asphalt surface. If you do not walk regularly, you are going to want to take the time to prepare for the walk.
Walker Training Tips
- The more you walk the more endurance you build. Walk for a half-hour during your lunch break, if you live close enough walk to work, wake up early in the morning and walk around your neighborhood.
- It’s important that when you are walking with others that you keep the pace that is best for you.
- Walking the same route can get boring. Living this up with a trip to the zoo, visit a local park, spend a morning or afternoon at a museum, or schedule a walking tour of a historic neighborhood.
- If you are not sure how far you are walking, use the Google Map Pemodeter (www.webwalking.com/googlemap.htm) to figure out the distance.
Shoes & Socks
- Wear socks that are made of a synthetic material, or a cotton and synthetic blend. Socks that are 100% cotton retain moisture. Moisture causes socks to bunch up and create friction between your foot and your sock. This is one of the leading causes of blisters.
- Socks should be form-fitting.
Blisters are caused by friction between the skin on your foot and your sock or your sock and your shoe. In turn, the heat that builds up makes the skin more fragile. You can reduce the cause of friction by changing your socks, (during longer walks) and by applying Vaseline or Bodyglide lubricant to all areas of your feet before you start your walk.

- Drink an extra 6 glasses of water throughout the 24 hours before you walk.
- Drink 2 glasses of water 2 hours before you exercise.
- While excersizing, you want to consume 5 ounces of water or sports drink per mile that you walk.
